Sir Richardson & More

I really enjoyed the clips we watched today with Sir Ken Richardson. I agree with all the points he was making. Being creative and motivating students to be creative is so important and will make learning meaningful.

Sir Ken was very good at public speaking. I was able to understand his thoughts and ideas and still be entertained. One thing that stuck out to me was the couple of stories he told. One about the child who became a dancer and the kid that wanted to be a firefighter. After listening to the stories I became very motivate to not down play any child. Everyone is their own person and everyone is can be creative. I was fascinated to hear that one simple diagnosis from a doctor completely changed a child's life. It was so fascinating for me to hear those stories.

The next thing I want to give a reflection on was Digital Storytelling. I think this idea is cool. However, searching around today for good resources concerning digital storytelling was a little difficult for myself. I wanted to focus in on Elementary Education but I was not very successful. According to Daniel Meadows "digital stories are short, personal multimedia tales told from the heart" One concern for using digital storytelling is making sure I find and pick an age appropriate activity.

At this point I am feeling a little more comfortable with Diigo. Still not great yet! I think it is such a neat program. I just easily am confused. I will just keep working at it and I am sure eventually I will get it!

  1. Hey Jen! Ken's stories about the dancer and firefighter really stuck out to me also. I must admit that throughout my years as a student I bought into the whole standardized education system. Now I realize that it failed me. I never related subject matter to my personal interests, and as a result I can remember very little of what I was taught. I also remember looking at kids who had passions for things much like those expressed in the video, and wondered why they didn't do more with their lives, or why didn't they want to go to college and improve their life? I now realize that there was nothing wrong with them, but instead it was today's educational system. I look forward to entering the classroom and ensuring that each student keeps their own dreams of what they want to become someday.

  2. Hey! I really loved the dancer story, I thought it was so appropriate. It reinforces the idea that teachers need to pay attention to their students as individuals, which is exactly what Sir Ken was saying. It was great. I'm really getting into Diigo, too. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to tag the links I want to share from my toolbar though. That part's really confusing :/

  3. Eric- I 100% agree with you. I feel like the standardize education system failed a lot of us. Obviously I remember things I learned here or there but if my things being taught were related to me personally, I feel like things would be a lot different now! I too look forward to entering the classroom and ensuring that each student keeps their own dreams. That to me is the best way to learn.

Amanda- I wonder why it has taken so long for teachers to realize the importance of looking at their students as individuals?! I know a lot of teachers do, but it would be nice if all did it! Oh and Diigo, yes that is confusing for me as well :-/
